Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is the only living genus in the Equisetaceae that reproduce by spores rather than seeds. Equisetum is classified as a living fossil growing for over one hundred million years.
The name "horsetail", was coined because the branched species somewhat resemble a horse's tail. The scientific name Equisetum derives from the Latin equus ("horse") and seta ("bristle"). This herbal remedy dates back to the ancient Roman and Greek medicine and was used traditionally to stop bleeding, heal ulcers and wounds, and treat tuberculosis and kidney problems. Those uses have not been confirmed or verified by modern day science.
Functions and Health Benefits attributed to Vegetal Silica Horsetail (Equisetum arvense):
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) has traditionally been used as a diuretic that helps the body get rid of excess fluid by increasing urine output. One study reported a decrease in diuresis where the use of horsetail was tested by people who had a history of uric acid kidney stones.
Horsetail has been recommended as a supporting nutritional supplement for osteoporosis (thinning bone), because it contains silicon, a mineral needed for bone health. Horsetail is sometimes also suggested as a beneficial supplement for people suffering from Brittle nails, Minor wounds and burns although there is no evidence whether it is helpful or not.
